Celebrities Diagnosed With M.E

M.E, or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is a condition characterised by persistent and inconceivable fatigue, muscle weakness and pain. The condition is prevalent in approximately 17-24 million people worldwide, however as yet there is no cure, and no definitive treatmeant. Celebrities are not exempt to the disease, with many managing their symptoms alongside glittering public careers.


Randy Newman

Newman contracted M.E in the 1980s. “I couldn’t get up a couple of steps without getting out of breath,” he said, in a People interview. “But the worst part is in your brain. You just can’t think of anything that you look forward to doing. Nothing looks good.”


Newman is known for his oscar winning song ''if i didn't have you?'' from Monster's Inc. A talented composer, with several well known film scores including James and the Giant Peach, and The Princess and the Frog.




Cher


Cher is another A-list celebrity diagnosed with M.E. When asked in a BBC interview if she thought the illness was psychosomatic, Cher replied, “My experience was that it was really a physical illness — but it does make you depressed as well … Boy, it was devastating for me.”

Cher has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. One of her most recent roles was in Mama Mia 2: Here We Go Again, where she played Sophie's grandmother.



Michael Crawford

Crawford contracted ME in 2004. “I’d be totally exhausted by mid-afternoon, and I could barely climb the stairs at home, ” he said. “I knew something was wrong, but I had no idea what. What I thought had been flu turned into a physical meltdown. I went for all sorts of brain and body scans until ME was finally diagnosed.”


An accomplished actor who has received great critical acclaim, Crawford has won numerous awards during his career, which covers radio, television, film, and, stagework on both London’s West End and on Broadway in New York City. He is best known for playing the title role in The Phantom of the Opera.




Martine McCutchen

McCutchen was diagnosed with M.E in 2012, speaking to The Sun on Sunday she said 'Life felt like hell every day. It's just been one thing after another. I have not been in a nice place in my head, financially nor with my career.'


McCutchen is best known for her role as Natalie in Love Actually, where she starred alongside Hugh Grant and Keira Knightly.












Stevie Nicks

Nicks was diagnosed with M.E in 1987 and found herself becoming addicted to painkillers as a coping mechanism for the symptoms she experienced.


The American singer and songwriter is known for her work with the band Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. With her her distinctive voice, mystical stage persona and poetic, symbolic lyrics, Nicks is a household name across the world.
