Freewheelin Dance are a wonderful dance company who have been performing for 4 years. Based in Birmingham they have performed in a variety of events including Birmingham Weekender, Birmingham International Dance Festival, and at the half time show of the European Wheelchair Basketball Finals. Further to this Freewheelin dance are the current National Champions in group freestyle for the National Para Dance UK Competition.
As you can see this group is challenging stereotypes surrounding public perception of disability. From the looks of this video, these talented individuals have plenty of ability! This is their latest performance at Birmingham Weekender, their first after lockdown. After speaking to the group, they discussed how hard lockdown was for the group. As most of the members were in the shielding category, and face to face classes were put on hold Freewheelin Dance turned to twice weekly online classes to maintain their incredible talent. However, lockdown itself and the restrictions enforced gave the group a chance to review their rehearsal process, after which they have now decided to continue online classes alongside face to face ones as a means of making classes more accessible for their members.
It is certain that this group is one to watch, an up and coming dance group challenging the very essence of the word 'disability'. Follow the group via their Facebook page to keep up to date with their upcoming performances.
